If you like to walk, try this route: go through the pineapple field to the cow pasture at the ocean's edge. Climb over the barbed-wire fence and follow the path down to a beautiful rock beach on a private cove. Or perhaps settling down on the bluff at the edge of the Pacific with a good bottle of wine would be preferable. You could also walk the other way, across the Hana Highway and up the hill to the Pauwela Cafe for a latte or lunch. Ohashi's store, just across the street, has great ice cream cones.

If you have the yen to swim at the beach, drive eight miles to Paia and visit Baldwin Beach, or go to Baby Beach at Sprecklesville. Be sure to leave time to watch the windsurfers at Hookipa. If the opportunity to swim in a pool beneath a waterfall offers more appeal, head toward Hana for about 10 minutes until you reach Mile Marker 15, park, and hike on up to Twin Falls.

Golf courses abound on Maui. The majority of the well-known courses are to be found at Wailea or at Kanapali, about an hour away. However, there are public courses in Kahalui and Pukalani. The closest course to the house is at Maui Country Club in Sprecklesville, a private club that also has tennis courts. You would need to contact them directly to arrange a visit.

Eating is a big pastime on Maui. Mama's Fish House is one of the best restaurants anywhere, and is just five miles away. It's expensive but worth it. Paia has good restaurants aplenty. We have three cafes in Haiku, and three small groceries; and then there are all the others we tell you about on our bulletin board.
